Description

Baby country fried steak sandwiches on Hawaiian Buns topped with dill pickles and sweet and spicy sauce. This southern style recipe makes for a great lunch!

Ingredients:

    Breading Ingredients
    1 1/2 cups flour
    2 tsp. salt
    2 tsp. pepper
    1/2 tsp. paprika
    1/2 tsp. onion powder
    1/2 tsp. garlic powder
    1/2 tsp. baking soda
    1/2 tsp. baking powder
2 cube steaks, each cut into 4 pieces

    Buttermilk Ingredients
    1 1/2 cup almond milk
    1 tbsp. apple cider vinegar

    Spicy Sweet Sauce
    1 tbsp. cayenne
    1 tbsp. brown sugar
    1/2 tsp. paprika
    1/2 tsp. garlic powder
    1/3 cup frying oil

    Sandwich Ingredients
    4 Hawaiian buns
    1 head iceberg lettuce
    Dill Pickles

Vegetable or canola oil for frying

Directions

1. In a bowl, combine first eight ingredients (i.e. flour and seasonings).
2. In another bowl, whisk together almond milk and apple cider vinegar. Set aside to thicken and form buttermilk like consistency.
3. Pat the cube steak dry with a paper towel. Cut large steak into 4 smaller steaks (about 2 inches by 2 inches). Season with salt and pepper. Let sit for 5 minutes.
4. Dice the head of iceberg lettuce into fine shreds.
5. Bread cube steaks - cover in flour seasoning mixture, dip into buttermilk mixture, and then another coat of flour seasoning. Make sure the steak is completely coated and place on a cooking sheet to rest for 10 minutes.
6. Heat oil in a skillet so that the oil is about 1/2 inch deep.
7. Fry steaks in batches. Be careful not to overload the pan - frying 2 or 3 steaks usually works best depending on the size of your pan. Fry the steak for 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Place cooked steak on paper towels to drain.
8. Reserve 1/4 cup frying oil for the sweet and spicy sauce. Combine frying oil with paprika, brown sugar, and garlic. Mix well.
10. Make your sandwich - place country fried steak on bun, spread sweet and spicy sauce on top bun, and top steak with lettuce and dill pickles.
*** Name-brand Hawaiian buns often contain dairy, but I have found some generic Hawaiian buns without dairy at Kroger and/or Kwik Trip.
    • Great with homemade french fries or homemade sweet potato fries.
    • Substitute Hawaiian bun out for a whole grain or whole wheat bun.
    • Substitute lettuce with spinach.
    • Gluten free option: Substitute Hawaiian bun for a gluten free bun.
